Home Alone:

When The Holidays Hurt

A 90-minute virtual workshop about spending the holidays apart from family, the complicated emotions it can bring up, and creating a holiday that feels meaningful and supportive on your own terms.

Sometimes the healthiest choice you can make during the holidays is not going home.

And sometimes the choice isn’t yours to make.

Whether you decided on distance from family or it was decided for you, spending the holidays apart can bring up grief, guilt, loneliness, anger, relief, self-doubt, and the uncomfortable question:

What do I do instead?

This virtual workshop explores what it means to spend the holidays apart from family, whether because of estrangement, geographic distance, religious differences, identity, recovery, loss, or simply recognizing that being together isn’t healthy right now.

Participants will explore the grief that can come up during the holiday season, talk through guilt and family expectations, prepare for difficult moments, and intentionally create a holiday that feels like them.

What we'll explore:

  • Why family relationships, grief, and attachment wounds can feel especially intense during the holidays

  • Why distance from family can still feel painful, whether you chose it or it was chosen for you

  • The guilt, self-doubt, and loneliness that can come with being absent from family celebrations

  • Ways to do more than simply survive the holidays

  • What celebrating on your own terms could actually look like, and creating your own “Home Alone” holiday plan

  • The comfort of being around people who get it

Meet Your Group Facilitator

Hi, I'm Chaucee. I'm a trauma therapist in Colorado, and grief and loss are central to my work. I love supporting those healing from religious trauma or difficult, neglectful, or dysfunctional family systems. I offer groups and workshops throughout the year, including my Pet Loss Grief Support Group, covering topics like trauma recovery, self-trust, grief, and relationships.

My service dog, Jax, is usually close by during groups and workshops, and I'm training a second pup, Mama, to join me in canine-assisted therapy down the road.
